Across the Tanaro River from the Barolo and Barbaresco districts, Filippo and his son Gianni Gallino have been pioneers in establishing the high quality of the wines of the Roero district.
The Filippo Gallino farm produces the Roero DOCG Riserva 'Sorano' wine, a spiced wine born from meticulous production work. The name derives from the word 'Suran', which in the local dialect represents the highest, windiest and sunniest Roerese hill.
This intense wine is matured for 24 months between barriques and tonneaux, followed by a long period of rest in the bottle. It is ruby red with garnet shades, which intensify over the years. The bouquet is opulent and complex, offering layers of ripe red fruit, spicy notes, balsamic hints, candied fruit, resin, violet, and vanilla. The structure is persistent and appropriately tannic, finishing with lingering retro-olfactory notes of jam and incense.
Ideal pairings include traditional Piedmontese first courses, red meats, game - both furred and feathered - and aged cheeses.
